FKM (Viton®) O-Rings for Automotive Applications: Engines, Gearboxes & Axles

When heat, oil and aggressive fluids are involved, not all O-rings are created equal. In automotive applications such as engines, gearboxes and axles, standard rubber seals often aren’t enough.

That’s where FKM (commonly known as Viton®) O-rings come in.

Designed to handle high temperatures, oils and harsh chemicals, FKM O-rings are widely used across modern vehicles where reliability matters most.

What Are FKM (Viton®) O-Rings?

FKM is a fluoroelastomer rubber specifically developed for demanding environments.

Compared to standard nitrile (NBR), FKM offers:

  • significantly higher temperature resistance

  • improved chemical compatibility

  • better long-term durability

This makes FKM the material of choice in many automotive sealing applications.

FKM O-Ring Temperature Range

One of the biggest advantages of FKM is its ability to cope with heat.

Typical operating range:
−20°C to +200°C (and higher in short bursts)

This makes FKM ideal for areas close to engines, exhausts and gearboxes where temperatures regularly exceed the limits of nitrile O-rings.

Why FKM O-Rings Are Used in Automotive Systems

Excellent Oil & Fuel Resistance

FKM O-rings perform exceptionally well with:

  • engine oil

  • gearbox oil

  • axle oil

  • transmission fluid (ATF)

  • diesel and petrol fuels

They resist swelling, hardening and degradation far better than standard rubbers.

Ideal for High-Temperature Areas

FKM is commonly used where heat is unavoidable, such as:

  • engine components

  • turbo oil feeds

  • transmission housings

  • axle assemblies

Where nitrile may harden or crack over time, FKM remains stable.

Long Service Life

Automotive systems are exposed to:

  • constant heat cycling

  • vibration

  • pressure changes

FKM O-rings offer better resistance to compression set, meaning they maintain sealing force for longer periods.

Common Automotive Uses for FKM O-Rings

Engines

  • oil filter housings

  • oil cooler connections

  • timing covers

  • camshaft and crankcase sealing points

Gearboxes & Transmissions

  • automatic and manual gearboxes

  • valve bodies

  • oil galleries

  • transmission casings

Axles & Driveline

  • axle housings

  • differential covers

  • breather fittings

  • oil sealing points

Anywhere hot oil is present, FKM is often the safest choice.

FKM vs NBR in Automotive Applications

Feature NBR (Nitrile) FKM (Viton®)
Oil resistance Good Excellent
Fuel resistance Moderate Excellent
Temperature resistance Up to ~100°C Up to ~200°C
Long-term durability Moderate High
Cost Lower Higher

For lower-temperature, general-purpose sealing, NBR works well.
For heat, oil and longevity, FKM is worth the upgrade.

When NOT to Use FKM O-Rings

Despite its strengths, FKM isn’t suitable for everything.

Avoid FKM when sealing:

  • glycol-based brake fluids (use EPDM instead)

  • very cold applications requiring extreme flexibility

  • water-only systems where EPDM is a better fit

Choosing the correct material is just as important as choosing the right size.

Choosing the Correct FKM O-Ring

When selecting an FKM O-ring, consider:

  • temperature at the sealing point

  • type of oil or fluid

  • pressure

  • correct size (ID, OD and CS)

We supply FKM O-rings in both metric and imperial (BS) sizes, from UK stock, with no minimum order quantity.

In Summary

FKM (Viton®) O-rings are trusted across the automotive industry for one simple reason — they work where others fail.

If your application involves:

  • hot oil

  • fuel

  • gearboxes or axles

  • long service intervals
